The Effects Of Too Much Information

I often hear that as a society, we are lucky to be living in the information age. but what about the effects of too much information? It seems that many blogs, websites, and articles are talking about this phenomenon in record numbers only adding to the point.

So where do you turn to find clarity in this information driven society?

We are now immersed in a world of e-this and e-that and there does not seem to be a bottom to the deep, dark well of faceless communication. In a sense, online anonymity has, in some respects, become the norm on how the next generation communicates with their peers.

With that being said, how do we get back to the face to face relationships that filled our Rolodex not even 20 years ago? (Anyone else remember the Rolodex?)

10-15 Years ago, we saw a dramatic change in the face of business, but was that change for the better?

For the most part I say 'Yes' however, have we now become so accustomed to the ease of email and other technology based tools so much that we have lost touch with the face to face relationships? We have inadvertently become fearful, if not lazy about our communication. As an example, last week I caught myself contacting a co-worker via email... I then anxiously awaited a reply.

Don't get me wrong here, I am a huge fan of the ease of technology, and the exponential growth that has made it easy for regular everyday consumers, like my Mother. For years I had to set her VCR clock, and she is now is interfacing with 'Movies on Demand' like it was second nature. All of these tasks are now easily accomplished all via the click of a button! Mom tells at least once a week that I am lucky that I grew up when I did, and that her grandchild (my son) is even luckier because technology moves too fast for her to keep up, and [he] will be growing up in the middle of it all. I just smile and say: 'Yes Mom"... as I certainly do not want to let on that technology moves faster than I can assimilate either.

My long winded point here is that it does not have to be like that. We have been overwhelmed with so much technology and innovation, that pulling our heads out of the sand can seem scary. Thank goodness that we are creating new technologies that will make and are (already) making life a place where a business associate, prospect, or client can talk face to face with you while they are in another part of the city, country, or world.

Case in point Momentum's "In-Motion" solution. Not only can your participants view presentations, share applications and collaborate on documents … but they can see one another!

The cool thing about this is it takes place almost seamlessly without all of the hardware and expense of traditional video conferencing. Your team can add the important personal visual connection to their Meetings, Sales presentations and Training events. All they need is a PC on the internet, and a simple webcam and headset.
