Can You Have Too Many Choices?
Choice is good... Right?
All too many times we have all walked into a restaurant looking for something different, only to order something similar. Why do we do this? We leave the house with the intention to try something new, only to be thwarted by some invisible force to stay within our comfort zone.
Ultimately, our thought process around this deals with something that we all do thousands of times every day.... Make choices. I could easily say that from 'Do I have time for breakfast?', to 'What time should I go to bed?', I make approximately 5000 choices a day. I think I am average, in that I for the most part, most of my decisions are not a matter of life & death. That said, subconsciously most of us like being 'informed' (or SOLD on the idea) that we need something bigger and better.... something new and improved (even though the debate is still on about how something can be new AND improved... I digress).
The fact is, we like being 'informed' because we all like to take the 'choice-factor' out of our lives as much as possible... You might even say that we, as humans, like things to be easy.
It is suggested that subconsciously, we all want our choices to be as easy as the "breakfast" & "bed-time" examples above as it seems that, unfortunately for the average sales person, too many choices places us in brain overload.
I mention all of this as I recently read an article that sheds some light on this subject. In the article, Sheena Iyengar, a Professor of Management at Columbia University, did an experiment on whether or not you can have too many choices... and how it affects sales. Each experiment consisted of a booth with a table asking you to choose your favorite Jam. On varying days, Professor Iyengar placed either 6 jars of Jam, or 24 jars of Jam out on the table. And here's what actually happened: 30% of the people who stopped at the booth with six choices, wound up buying some jam, but... only THREE percent of the folks who stopped at the booth with 24 choices, wound up making a purchase.
That's a TEN TIMES differential!
This isn't surprising at all, as the truth is, when you (and your prospects) are confronted with having to make too many decisions, there's always a disconnect.
